SAVE Programs in Yobe State - A Huge Success!!
Report by MUHAMMAD REZA SULEIMAN,
the Yobe State SAVE Coordinator
The rally to 'Save African Women from Pregnancy Related Deaths' ("SAVE") in Yobe State was launched on July 5, 2010, in Nguru Local Government.
The TEAM Yobe visited the Nguru Local Secretariat chanting slogans like ‘Women don’t have to die to give life.’ After that, the Secretary to the Local Government invited the Team to his office and addressed us. He welcomed us, on behalf of the Chairman (who was out of town) and the people of Nguru Local Government and expressed his desire to join the group at the State Mega Rally in Damaturu, the Yobe State Capital.
From the Secretariat, the TEAM proceeded to the Nguru Emir’s Palace passing through Ahmadu Bello Way stopping at the Market Square for interactive session with the people. They asked questions like: What is the objective of the rally? What benefits would their wives get from the program and so on? The Coordinator replied: ‘The SAVE Program is an initiative of Sweet Mother International. This stage (the rally) is the first phase of the program. The second stage is the implementation stage where the SAVE program will donate drugs and other needed necessities that would help in reducing, if not eradicate, maternal mortality in Africa.’
The rally then proceeded to the Emir’s Palace where he welcomed the TEAM. After observing the royal protocol, the Emir, Alhaji Mustapha
Galadima Kyari, expressed his happiness on such kind of bold step taken by Sweet Mother International and the SAVE TEAM in Yobe. Particularly, the Emir commended the TEAM's effort in raising awareness on maternal health issues and for bringing to public light the increasing deaths of women from treatable pregnancy complications. The Emir also advised the TEAM to reach out to the local communities as the menace is more rampant there. He also pledged his full support to the program to link-up the TEAM to the local communities. We then headed to the Chief Imam of the Nguru Central Mosque where we met the senior Imam. The Mobilization Officer, Malam Muhammad Adam Jawa introduced the group and the Imam prayed for safe delivery of expecting mothers. As subsidiary to the above, the rally visited the Christian Church of God located in the Low-cost. Unfortunately, we couldn’t meet the Reverend-in-Charge. We met his deputy, Abraham Timothy, who also prayed for safe delivery of pregnant women in the State.
The rally in Nguru was terminated after a visit to the Federal Medical Center. There, we visited new and expecting mothers in the Maternity Ward of the Hospital. They were so happy to know that we were campaigning for them.
In Gashua, we visited the Primary Health Care, where we met the Coordinator, Mallam I. B. Shehu. He promised to link the TEAM to villages and rural communities within Gashua. We also received a letter from the Emir of Gashua who promised to donate handsomely to the cause.
The National Television Authority (NTA) Yobe offered their support and covered the rally.

Muhammad, the SMI Coordinator in Yobe State, visited Sheikh Khalifah Hashim Muhammad, one of the most influential religious scholars in Yobe. His sermons and preachings almost always touch the issues of maternal health and reproductive health.
Muhammad introduced SMI and its programs to him, and he pledged his support for the SAVE program and expressed his intention to join SMI Yobe as Volunteer. Muhammad also sought his unflinching Patronship, to which he accepted.

SWEET MOTHER INTERNATIONAL (SMI)
Campaign to
SAVE AFRICAN WOMEN FROM PREGNANCY-RELATED DEATHS (“SAVE”)
2011 Campaign Season
Goals proposed by: MUHAMMAD REZA SULEIMAN, Coordinator of SMI-SAVE Programs in Yobe State.
1. To embark on series of sensitization and enlightenment seminars in various local governments of Yobe State including the Capital Damaturu. In these seminars, we will invite all stakeholders (including the government, organisations, individuals, and other volunteers) to round table discussions. During these sessions, we will make presentations on the causes, effects and possible solutions to maternal mortality in the State.
2. To host a Radio Drama depicting how dangerous the menace of maternal mortality is to communities and government. During this program, we will be proffering solutions on how to eradicate maternal deaths in the state. By doing this, the larger population of people in the state will be aware of their civic and social responsibility towards taking effective action in the cause to eradicate maternal deaths in the State.
3. To donate items needed by new and expecting mothers in various hospitals and maternity centers in the state.
4. To collaborate actively with traditional rulers and religious scholars -- as they know better the problems associated with the local communities.
